Personalised Innovative Design

Shift Design Studio was founded in 1997 as a one-woman design practice run as an arts studio specializing in personalized design of buildings, interiors and landscapes. Certified as a 'Climate Positive, Green Business’, Shift Design Studio offers full services for commercial, residential and civic projects, from pre-design research through design, permitting and construction administration, with an emphasis on sustainability (materials, energy, lifestyle) and universal design (ADA, disabled access, aging in place). Project management, permit expediting, budget coordination, color consulting, arts services, materials selections, interior design and custom furnishings are available for projects of any size.

Jane Martin is a licensed architect and artist whose work embraces all scales from sculpture to urban planning. She has been named by SFMOMA as one of the Bay Area’s leading experimental designers. An avid gardener, Ms Martin is Founding Director Emeritus of Plant*SF, a non-profit focused on combined sewer storm water diversion through public space community-based planting projects. She has held teaching and administration positions in architecture, art and design at the California College of the Arts and the University of California, Berkeley. Ms Martin has served as a San Francisco Commissioner of the Environment, participates in a number of civic organizations, and researches the relationship between people and their built and natural environments.

Ms Martin apprenticed in Illinois, Melbourne, New York, Tokyo and San Francisco and is licensed to practice throughout California, Hawai’i and Aotearoa New Zealand. Inquiries for projects, commissioned artworks, and speaking engagements in any location are welcome.

Ms Martin earned a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (and Université d’Illinois à Versailles, France) and a Master of Architecture from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Currently she is a PhD Candidate in Human Geography at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.
